Aidan Gomez

1995–, Computer scientist; CEO of Cohere

Aidan N. Gomez is a Canadian computer scientist who, as a 20-year-old Google Brain intern in 2017, was a co-author of Attention Is All You Need, the paper introducing the Transformer architecture that now underpins nearly all modern AI. He was the youngest of the eight authors and contributed to the encoder-decoder design and experiments.

After completing his undergraduate work at the University of Toronto and beginning a PhD at Oxford under Yarin Gal on Bayesian deep learning, Gomez co-founded Cohere in 2019 with Ivan Zhang and Nick Frosst (Geoffrey Hinton's former student). Cohere is an enterprise-focused LLM company specialising in retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings and classification for business applications. The company has positioned itself as a developer-platform alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic, with strong support for Cohere Command and Embed models on AWS, Oracle Cloud, and on-premises deployments.

Gomez has been Cohere's CEO since 2019. The company was valued at approximately USD 5.5 billion in 2024 and has raised over a billion dollars in funding from investors including Nvidia, Salesforce, Oracle and Cisco. He has been a public advocate for sober, business-focused AI deployment as a counterweight to AGI-focused frontier-lab discourse, and a frequent voice on the AI Engineer Summit and Latent Space podcast circuits.
