1965–, Computer scientist, linguist

Also known as: Christopher D. Manning

Christopher David Manning is an Australian-American computer scientist and computational linguist who has been one of the central figures in NLP for thirty years. His 1999 textbook with Hinrich Schütze, Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing, was the standard text for a generation of NLP researchers, and his 2014 Speech and Language Processing lecture videos (with Dan Jurafsky) reached an enormous audience.

Manning's research has covered statistical parsing, dependency parsing, sentiment analysis, treebanks (the Stanford Dependencies representation), word embeddings (with Jeffrey Pennington and Richard Socher he co-developed GloVe, 2014), and the broader transition of NLP from rule-based to neural methods. He directs the Stanford NLP Group and is a co-founder of the Stanford AI Lab's modern incarnation as part of the Institute for Human-Centred AI.
