Abstract. The May 2023 New York Times report covering Geoffrey Hinton's resignation from Google. After a half-century of foundational work on neural networks, Hinton stepped down so he could speak freely about catastrophic risk from AI. He cited concerns about misinformation, labour-market disruption, and the longer-run possibility of misaligned superintelligence. The resignation drew widespread media attention and became a turning point in mainstream discourse on AI risk; Hinton subsequently became one of the most prominent senior figures publicly advocating for caution.
